Found in Translation: the outsider

Literary translation is challenging, often leaving readers feeling that something is ‘lost in translation’. Perhaps. But also: ‘How wonderful – to translate from one language to another, and by so doing to bring people closer to one another – what a beautiful idea,’ writes Olga Tokarczuk.

This course explores the theme of the outsider in three remarkable books translated into English from French, Polish and German.

Dr Robert Hemmings has been teaching, researching, and writing about literature and culture for more than 30 years. He has published on a wide range of topics, including modernism, material culture, nostalgia, trauma, medical humanities, war poetry and children’s literature. He has a special interest in lifelong learning and so is very pleased to have the opportunity to read and discuss poetry and other cultural texts at the Ilkley Playhouse.
